I am pleased to invite the reviewers and all attendees to the online Ph.D. defense of our graduate student, Mr. Hiroki Yamao. This defense also serves as the final evaluation for the completion of the Neuro Global Program (NGP), QE2.
The defense committee will be chaired by myself, Ko Matsui. From Tohoku University, the internal reviewers are Professor Kenichiro Tsutsui, Professor Kentaro Abe, Associate Professor Shinya Ohara, and Assistant Professor Tzu-Ting Huang. Our external reviewers are Professor Christine Rose from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Professor Frank Kirchhoff from Saarland University. In addition to evaluating the Ph.D. dissertation, the two external reviewers will also assess Mr. Yamao's performance for the NGP overseas research component.
Allow me to briefly introduce Mr. Hiroki Yamao. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hokkaido University and joined my laboratory at Tohoku University in 2020. He has been a participant in both the Neuro Global Program and the Data Science Program at Tohoku University. Since 2023, he has held a JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC2). In 2024, he conducted a three-month international collaborative research stay in Professor Christine Rose's lab as part of his NGP and Data Science study abroad program. He published a first-author paper in Glia in 2025 and, just last week, was honored with the prestigious Toshihiko Tokizane Memorial Award for Excellent Graduate Study in Neuroscience at the Japan Neuroscience Meeting 2025.
The title of his presentation is "Astrocyte Signaling Underlying Fear Memory Fate Determination." The presentation will last 40 minutes, followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session. Afterward, there will be a closed 30-minute review session, during which we kindly ask Mr. Yamao and all attendees to leave the Zoom meeting. The outcome of the evaluation will be announced at a later date.
