2025年9月25日、東北大学学位記授与式を、百周年記念会館川内萩ホールにおいて挙行しました。式典は、学位ストールを着用した総長、理事・副学長、各研究科長らが入場し、厳粛に開式しました。冨永悌二総長より、学士54名、修士・専門職154名、博士149名の代表者に学位記が授与され、告辞が述べられました。続いて、卒業生・修了生を代表して山尾啓熙さん(生命科学研究科)が答辞を述べ、会場全員で学生歌を斉唱し、式を締めくくりました。

夏の暑さも和らぎ、秋の訪れを感じる今日この佳き日、私たち卒業生・修了生一同は、晴れて東北大学の学位記授与式を迎えることができました。私たちのために式典を挙行いただきありがとうございます。冨永総長をはじめ、ご多忙の中ご臨席賜りました先生方に、心より御礼申し上げます。留学生が多い秋の学位記授与式のため、ここから英語でご挨拶申し上げます。

Marking its proud tradition since its founding in 1907, Tohoku University has upheld the principles of “Research First” and the “Open-Door Policy,” which continue to guide its excellence in education and research today. I feel deeply privileged to have pursued my studies at this distinguished institution and to call myself a graduate of Tohoku University.

My studies at the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University, began in 2020, just as the world was entering a new era with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research activities were restricted, experiments were delayed, and all classes were moved online. This was a period of great uncertainty, not only for me but for all students. However, I believe that this global challenge pushed us forward, and we were able to evolve to a new standard by seizing the opportunity. Collectively, we learned new ways of conducting discussions, sharing ideas, and advancing our studies under unprecedented circumstances. The societal challenges brought about by the pandemic actually drew us closer together, fostering greater care, consideration, and compassion among lab members. I also feel fortunate to have been immersed in cutting-edge academic topics at Tohoku University while remaining attentive to both global and local trends.

During my Master's and doctoral studies, I had the honor of working under the guidance of Professor Ko Matsui. My research focused on the mechanisms by which non-neuronal cells in the brain, known as glial cells, regulate memory formation and perception in animals. Through this work, I was able to present a new paradigm for understanding how the mind operates, and I feel I have reached an important milestone in my academic training. My graduate research was recognized by the Japan Neuroscience Society, and I was awarded the Toshihiko Tokizane Memorial Award for Excellent Graduate Study in Neuroscience at the Society’s annual meeting in Niigata this year. I wish to continue pursuing an academic career with the aim of uncovering how the biological brain performs complex information processing.

During my doctoral course, I was fortunate to receive support from three distinguished programs at Tohoku University: the Graduate Program in Data Science, the Neuro Global Program, and the Pioneering Research Support Project for PhD Students. In addition, I was selected as a recipient of the JSPS Research Fellowship. These opportunities provided not only essential financial support but also an environment that encouraged me to engage in academic inquiry and interdisciplinary training.

With the support of these programs, I was able to expand my research on the international stage. I participated in several international conferences, including the Euroglia Meeting in Germany, as well as the two-month CAJAL Advanced Neuroscience Training Program in France. Furthermore, I undertook a three-month research stay at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany. These experiences enabled me to achieve valuable outcomes that significantly advanced my doctoral research. They greatly enriched my academic development, broadened my perspectives, and taught me the importance of cultural diversity and international cooperation in modern-day academic inquiry.

In addition to the international experience, the Data Science Program provided me with the opportunity to acquire hands-on skills in handling and analyzing large-scale datasets, equipping me with powerful tools to approach complex biological questions. Through the Neuro Global Program, I gained exposure to global trends in neuroscience and deepened my understanding of how research connects across disciplines and cultures. Moreover, active exchanges with peers from diverse fields broadened my perspectives and inspired me to think creatively beyond the boundaries of conventional disciplines.

Today, I stand with both a sense of accomplishment and hope for the future, taking my first steps toward a new chapter. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all who have supported me along the way. I am grateful to my academic advisors, who guided me with wisdom and patience. I am equally indebted to my colleagues and fellow students, with whom I had the privilege of striving together and from whom I drew inspiration. I am also grateful to the administrative staff, whose dedication sustained our research activities and studies, and to my family and friends, whose constant encouragement gave me the strength to persevere through difficult times. Their support and kindness carried me through both the joyful milestones and the challenges of my studies.

As I complete this chapter of my journey as a graduate of Tohoku University, I intend to give back to society and to the academic community by applying the knowledge, creativity, and ethical values I have cultivated during my years here. As graduates of Tohoku University, I believe we share the responsibility to drive innovation, to contribute to the advancement of human knowledge, and to dedicate ourselves to solving societal challenges in order to make the world a better place. We are also called upon to uphold integrity in all that the future may bring. Though each of us will follow different paths from this day forward, we remain united by the values fostered at this great university—values that will continue to guide and inspire us in the years ahead.

最後に、今日までご指導いただいた先生方、研究生活を支えてくださった仲間と大学職員の皆様、そしていつも心の支えとなってくださった家族・友人に、改めて感謝申し上げます。本日ご臨席いただきました皆様方のご健勝とご多幸、ならびに東北大学のさらなる発展をお祈りし、答辞とさせていただきます。
